On the drive home Friday night from my week with the abuelos, Hector and I learned that my current host family had gone off on vacations without finding me a place to stay for the long weekend. As the Castillos were going off to Mazatlan Saturday morning with a full crew of seven people, it wasn't really feasible for me to stay with them. Hector frantically tried to find place for me to stay but to no avail, and so being the amazingly generous family that they are, the Castillos brought me with them! So thanks to a bit of an unfortunate occurrence, I actually ended up having an absolutely fantastic weekend with my first host family in Mazatlan. It was filled with yummy breakfasting, walking along the beach and lounging by the pool. Yep, I only slept in Tepic one night before continuing my vacation! Tough life.
One the drive down, we stopped to eat at this nationally famous restaurant called Cuchupetas. It's the perfect example of how in Mexico you truly cannot judge a restaurant's quality by it's appearance. This restaurant looks like your average casual seafood shack, but it's so popular they've had to expand it to include three separate buildings. They haven't changed the appearance or style of the restaurant at all, but the walls are absolutely filled with all the famous people that have come to eat there. And I have to say it absolutely measured up to it's reputation. The pescado sarandeado and pescado frita were ricisimos!
We ran into the owner and flipped out like fan girls! I think we probably took 30 photos with the man |
